Block Party returns! With a new look, new games and the same amazing energy. Join us for the second annual art installation and play space including a 215ft road mural, patio space and outdoor games like basketball, ping pong, tetherball and more. You won’t want to miss out on this interactive and immersive outdoor experience with free and fun programs happening all summer long.
Block Party provides a vibrant, accessible, and safe art and play space where Calgarians can engage with outdoor public art and one another while physically distancing. The installation is lined by over 200 feet of pathway and walk space and will be accompanied by art adorned picnic tables, umbrellas and benches that meet Alberta Health Guidelines for spacing and cleaning protocols.
Stay and play by enjoying the many food vendors at Deerfoot City’s Food Lodge, outdoor shopping on The Boulevard and entertainment including outdoor lawn games, The Rec Room, iFly and more throughout the summer. Michelle Hoogveld is a Canadian Visual Artist whose vibrant style is inspired by colour theory, connection and matters of the heart. Michelle creates compositions of bold patterns and textile-like blockings of colour, with layers that weave and fold together as an intricate tapestry of who we are as people, places we encouter and the one thing that connects us all – love. Her colourful works are internationally recognized, beautifying and uplifting spaces in both the private and public realm. Creating on canvas and walls, Michelle has worked with a wide range of clients in Canada, the United States, Peru, Mexico, Germany, Portugal and England. “Syd The Artiste” – Sydonne Warren – is a Jamaican-Canadian Contemporary Visual Artist who specializes in large-scale expressive paintings, murals, and digital design. Her artwork often showcases a combination of high contrast subjects, bold colour palettes, and a mixture of expressive strokes, drips and rigid lines. Her themes reflect her experiences as a Jamaican-Canadian immigrant woman and mother. She uses her perspective to share her desire for the African diaspora to occupy, impact and own space. Sydonne’s work has appeared in locations across Calgary including the Core Shopping Centre, the Jamaican Canadian Association, Centre Street and Kensington. In 2020, Avenue Magazine listed Sydonne’s Black Lives Matter mural as one of the “Good things that happened in Calgary”. That same year she was named “Artist of the Year” by Diversity Magazine’s African Caribbean Awards for her impact on the city as a person of colour.
Kiran Rai (KRAI) is a multidisciplinary Punjabi artist based out of Canada. Well versed in fine arts, design, and architecture, Kiran fuses her love of creating with embracing the public accessibility of the arts. She strongly believes in design by the people, for the people. Engaging with topics surrounding women and their cultural, digital, and diasporic identities, she reflects and celebrates the collisions of ethnographics, while also working to decolonize western frameworks and investigate key social issues. Her recent artistic endeavours include showcasing in galleries, live painting, public murals, and NFT projects. Always interested in experimenting with different styles and mediums, Kiran has completed her Masters in Architecture in which she lived in Tokyo part-time. She is also an avid world traveller, plant mom, and iced chai connoisseur. She is curious to see how design and art can intersect to provide meaningful connections in everyday life.
Cory Bugden is a Canadian illustrator based out of Calgary, Alberta. Originally a graphic designer for an agency that served clients like Oakley, Speedo and Red Bull, Cory decided to further his artistic capabilities at the Alberta University of the Arts in 2016, completing his degree in 2020. Cory uses bright colours with a fun and whimsical illustration style that can force a smile on anyones face. When he grows up, Cory wants to be a studio-owner, creative director, children’s book illustrator and amateur freestyle rapper.
